Did You Know? Most U.S. Home Fires Happen in the Winter Months

Did you know that December, January and February are the leading months for US home fires? It makes a lot of sense if you think about it! Everyone is trying to keep warm so we build fires in the fire place, plug in electric space heaters or fire up the pellet stove. All these activities increase the risk of home fires.

Other winter activities like holiday decorating, Christmas trees, candles and Christmas lights can be hazards or cause electrical issues.

Below are the top causes of home fires.  Be sure to look out for them:

Cooking – Christmas, Christmas Eve and Thanksgiving rank 1st, 2nd and 3rd as the leading days for home cooking fires. Especially when trying to deep fry a turkey.  Be sure to follow proper instructions and take the necessary safety precautions.

Heating – Heating equipment was involved in an estimated 56,000 reported home fires per year! Take the time to hire a professional to maintain and clean you home heating equipment. This includes chimneys!

Christmas Trees – While Christmas tree fires are not as common, they are probably the most deadly.  I think we’ve all seen a dry Christmas tree go up in flames.  There is no stopping it. Electrical distribution was involved in 38% of home Christmas tree fires so don’t put too many lights on the tree.

Candles – Candles can be a safe way decorating but many people put them too close to curtains, drapes, and upholstery. Be aware of what is around an open flame.

Have a safe and warm winter!
